Gail and Dan were planning an unconventional wedding and wanted an unconventional wedding invitation.
They were getting married on a pier in Long Island City with a great view of the Manhattan skyline. I researched the history of Long Island City and the piers and wanted to present something that was vintage New York. Since people were coming from all over to stay in various sections of Manhattan, and would need good directions to get to the pier, we came up with the idea of incorporating a map. I created a design based on an old fashioned travel folio. I copied the boxy old advertisement style on the back panel to suggest places where the guests could stay and also announce the location of the reception. I used an environmental printer who just happened to have a tree-free paper made of recycled blue jeans, which not only was the exact blue color we were looking for but also subtly related to the manufacturing history of Long Island City, an added bonus. The fun in this project was in the details.
